Familiar with the phrase “ghost writer” or maybe you’ve heard of “ghostwriting” ?

Whether you have or you haven’t, you may even be surprised to hear that the topic is somewhat controversial.

It’s definitely a mixed bag when it comes to how people feel about it.

Nevertheless, with that said, the first thing that I want to do is mention that after reading some posts on this topic, I came across a guest blogger on Jon Morrow’s Smartblogger blog by the name of Ali Luke who authored a very insightful piece on the subject.

Before I proceed, I want to also highlight for those of you that may not be aware.. Smartblogger is formerly boostblogtraffic.com and it’s a gem of a blog that provides great useable insight.

Additionally, while this is a complimentary plug for Jon and his blog, it is entirely unsolicited. I say this because reading his blog can only elevate a bloggers writing skillset as you continue to grow your blog assuming you’re a blogger or an aspiring one reading this post today.

My thoughts in this post are intended to extend, compliment and respond to some notable points Ali made in what she had to say and shared with so many that could be helped by her additional insight on the topic of ghostwriting.

Given the longevity of ghost writing, I was surprised that there isn’t as much demand for information on the topic as I had thought there might be, but that does not in any way dilute or devalue the importance of the topic at all either.

This could likely be due to it’s obvious and maybe not so obvious “con’” or unappealing aspect(s) of it if you will, but it still makes me wonder considering there are some decent advantages to experimenting and getting your feet wet in this area of writing.

One of the first things that caught my attention in Ali’s post was her reference to what if someone hired you to ghost write for them ?

Quite frankly even on my blog at this time, I’m not set up for it either and on many blogs I’ve read and come across in my blogging tenure, it’s not something that I see readily advertised.

Again, this could be due to a lack of interest or knowledge about what it is.

So let’s explore it defined:

A ghost writer is someone who writes or develops content for someone else while also agreeing that the receiving person of that content will retain full, complete and official rights and exclusivity to those works. The ghost writer does not take any credit whatsoever for the content that has been written.

Ghost writing is the process of writing content by an individual that remains unnamed and publicly not associated with that content.

As Ali explains it succinctly.. you don’t get any credit at all.

Sounds awful doesn’t it ?

Well maybe not and as with a good many things in life, it may not be as bad as it seems. So much of this conversation relies on your perspective and digging into this a bit further.

With that said, the first thing that came to mind for me is understanding that whether you’re looking for someone to do guest posting or other variations of search queries associated with content development or contributing content to any other outlet besides the web properties you own or manage directly…

There’s writing going on by “other” authors all the time.

Granted, I do understand the elephant in the room is that those content authors are receiving credit for their accepted and published works, but also realize that ghost writers aren’t writing for free.

Consider this reality for those who ghost write that when you aren’t getting any credit whatsoever for the content you’re developing for someone else that it inevitably puts you in a very unique position to receive compensation on a higher level that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to receive let alone ask for or negotiate.

So without question, this addresses the money aspect and perspective on this subject and the truth is simple.. if you’re writing, making money as a byproduct of your efforts is a great bonus too.  

Another great point Ali made that really struck me was about the other side of the equation… the audience.. the readers.

I personally think you can land in one of three scenarios on this one.

We all read and take in a variety of content everyday, several times throughout the day, but what happens when you read something and it’s not authored by who you thought it was by ?

How do you receive it and what happens when the content was not developed by the owner of that blog ?

Should that truly detract from what you’ve read if it still provides you with the answers to your questions that ultimately led you to the content in the first place or not ?

In my opinion:

Scenario 1 would be the individuals that don’t really feel strongly about it one way or the other because their bottom line was, did I get what I sought out to receive ?

Scenario 2 would be the individuals that lean into and place a high degree of conviction on the words that come from the author they have come to follow.

Scenario 3 would be everyone else that ends up in the middle ground where it depends on the content. There may be times they fall into the first scenario and other times where they fall into the second and I think even for me I’d be more of a scenario 3.

Even so, regardless of the scenario ghost writing doesn’t seem all that terrible to me.

In all transparency, Ali also points out that yes you lose some of the advantages of building your brand and your portfolio of works because you can’t claim any of the content you write but from my perspective sometimes the bigger picture for example and in this instance isn’t necessarily about me or even the money.

I firmly believe that there will always be times that the opportunity to write even without the recognition is far more important than getting named as the one who did it.

However, that’s my perspective and yours may be different and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but if you consider ghost writing, despite the ethicality that arises regarding why you should or shouldn’t do it, know your own why with respect to your decision to proceed or decline the opportunity when it knocks upon your door.

However, let’s consider that what I’ve said is basically the outline of your blogging process. In all honesty, it’s not about placing an intentional focus on improving your writing skills is it ?

That’s probably because at the core of writing, most believe that either you can do it or you can’t and that’s a pretty reasonable place to land in the writing landscape, but that’s not where we want to stay.

We’re bloggers and finding ways to improve your writing skills should be of interest to you because even if you don’t talk about it or think about it, who wants to be on the scale of 1 to 10.. a marginal blogger who writes “just marginally” at best ?

You may not think about it, but we want to do our best to write our best and that means taking intentional steps to get there.

Nevertheless, it’s a massive topic to get into and I’m only going to touch on a couple of things with the hope that I get you thinking about it with more focus and intention to looking at your skillset with the goal of continuous improvement in that area.

It’s not a knock on how you write, it’s about the goal of doing what you do in your blogging, writing and content development even better.

How to improve writing skills

Sometimes the most obvious things are worth saying and I’m going to say this in the context of this post because it’s relevant.

Reading what other people are writing in your niche can and will improve your writing skills.

You’re arming yourself with different perspectives, facts and in a subtle way you’re also internalizing the different content structures of how others write.

This can be an essential activity to engage in as you read content from others that are considered experts in the respective niches that you’re in. Additionally, it brings new ideas to the table that also add to your overall writing process.

Writing skills also improve by making the comparisons to your writing and to that of others as well.

There’s nothing wrong in admitting that you may not have a very strong vocabulary and admitting what we lack is where potential for growth begins.

So use metaphors. Some individuals are known to use these sparingly and others use them more generously in their writing.

If you’re not familiar with what good metaphors are, the best way to explain it would be to say that it’s basically a comparison made between two things that aren’t really alike but do share some commonality.

Why should you use them ?

Metaphors add a type of expression to your writing that you aren’t likely to have otherwise. A common one that I like to use is: the elephant in the room.

It refers to something that is obvious and if I use it contextually to talk about a question, I might say the following:

We all know that in blogging the elephant in the room is how do we get more traffic.

The obvious question for anyone developing a blog is how to get more visitors and that is the elephant in the room.

Finding examples of metaphors to use in your content adds a unique level of expression that enables you to express yourself that differs from others that may be writing similar content which is why I highly recommend finding relevant good metaphor examples to use in your blog posts.

Notably, while this post highlights my thoughts on how to improve your writing skills, the use of strong verbs and using different metaphor examples, it all centralizes around the activity of writing itself because that’s what we do as bloggers and content developers regardless of the niche you’re in.

Write often and do so in a way that personalizes who you are to showcase your uniqueness in the development of your writing skillset.

Now while I’ve listed these site resources to indicate where high pr backlinks can be acquired, I also want you to be knowledgeable and fully aware of the full scope of the conversation on link building. Beyond just trying to manipulate your SEO portfolio with the intention to increase power to rank but the other aspects of the conversation that you may not be aware of too.

Assuming that you don’t know much about backlinks, there are free and paid backlinks. As you can imagine, paying for links probably isn’t a good thing in the eyes of Google.

With that said, here’s what Google says on the topic of link schemes: Google Policies on Link Manipulation. However, the reality is that this is highly practiced online and there are many outlets where you can find paid backlink services. Ultimately, it may meet your backlinking needs in the short term but it’s a long term strategy that will do more harm than good.

Another reason why I mention this is because on the topic of high pr backlinks or authoritative backlinks, in full and complete transparency, the truth of the matter is that you can find services for them on many forums and even on service marketplaces such as Fiverr and their alternatives as well just as I mentioned before prior to listing the video above.

So yes, there are risks associated with targeting high pr backlinks and that is something that you must weigh into your overall strategy as you develop and implement your particular linking plan as to whether it’s worth it or not.

Beyond that, please understand that what I have said in the past is something that I really want you to hear. Link with a purpose to help and not just to be self-serving. Granted as you build links and acquire backlinks, some will be good, some will fall into that just okay category and some are going to be golden.

Always, always, always, link to places that are in your niche. Always link to places that are relevant. If you use free or paid high authority backlinks, my advice is to use them to help you rank for low hanging fruit or on easy keywords to help you rank faster, but understand the risks associated with that strategy too.

On another note of pertinent linking advice, if you have a food blog, don’t link to a car blog. It’s that kind of linking, regardless of what kind of authority the target site may have that will do harm to your own website.

With that said, there’s so much more that can be discussed on the topic of linking, but for now I’ll conclude this in saying that you should stay as whitehat as possible in your linking strategy and consider the risks of link manipulation too as you go about your own link building campaigns for your respective websites.
